Coping and Battling the Disease: Hair Wigs for Cancer Patients

Battling cancer can be difficult and painful—and not only the pain caused by treatments such as chemotherapy. Battling the effects of the disease can be devastating and agonizing as well, emotionally and mentally. One of the effects of cancer (or, to be precise, the treatment for cancer, chemotherapy) is hair loss. When one undergoes chemotherapy, the radiation kills both the bad cells—and the good cells. With this, the ability of the body to grow hair is hampered, hence the hair loss. Those with no direct contact with a cancer patient might think worrying about one’s hair while battling cancer may seem shallow. But, as many would know, it isn’t. The effect of seeing your hair gone and going out bald and sick-looking can be difficult, as if you’re wearing a badge revealing to the world of your situation. This is something many do not and would not want to go through. This is why people would undergo chemotherapy wear hair wigs.

If you’re going to undergo chemotherapy and are planning to buy hair wigs, take the time to think about this first. Of course, deciding that you’re going to wear a wig is a big step in itself. After that, the rest will be easy—at least when choosing hair wigs is concerned.

Before anything else, consult your doctor. This will be useful later on (and you’ll see why). First, ask your doctor if you will need the hair pieces and wigs, especially if you haven’t done chemotherapy yet. Some drugs used in chemotherapy do not cause hair loss, although most do. Everything really depends on the drugs that will be used, and who will know better about this than your doctor. If the doctor thinks you’ll need the wig, make him give you a prescription.

The prescription will be used later on so you can make your insurance coverage pay for the hair wigs you will buy. Many policies actually cover hair wigs as a medical expense (called hair prosthesis in some plans) although many also limit their coverage to only synthetic hair wigs. In any case, if your plan covers any kind of hair pieces and wigs, make them pay for it. Obviously, this is why you need the prescription.

After this has been settled, talk to a stylist or someone familiar with hair wigs. Get his or her opinion regarding the hair wig style that will suit you according to your physical traits. You will want the wig you will use to look natural, that’s for sure. It may also help if you get other hair pieces. Alternate your hair pieces and wigs. Buy caps and other head covers; you will need this during the first few days and weeks of your wig wearing. Wearing hair wigs is something you should get used to. During days when you don’t feel like wearing hair wigs, use the hair covers.

Hair pieces and wigs will not make the pain of cancer treatment feel any less, but they can help patients cope with the other pain the condition can bring.

Why People are Afraid to Wear Hair Wigs

The stigma associated with wearing hair wigs is no longer as rampant as it was, say, a few years ago. However, it is still there, although people are now more understanding. Popular media still makes fun of people wearing wigs, unfortunately, as if hair loss is a laughing matter. This should be remedied because, fact is, a significant number of people suffer from hair loss. Until now, there is no known cure for hair loss, besides the few products that claim otherwise. This makes it more difficult for people to wear hair wigs.

But what exactly are the reasons why people are afraid?

Mainly, it is because of how people perceive people losing their hair. There is often this feeling of pity, feeling sad for the people because he is losing his hair. After all, some people do not even experience any sign of hair loss as they grow old. Why are these people losing their hair? Some say the public perception for men suffering from hair loss is that he is like a woman who gained weight. And anyone can tell you what this means. In short, although the person had nothing to do with it, people suffering from hair loss are often seen in contempt, as if they are less of a person because they have less hair.

And then there are people who do not understand why they wear hair pieces and wigs in the first place. Why not just flaunt your condition, some might think. Wearing hair wigs some say, is a sign of insecurity. This person wearing wig hair still hasn’t accepted the fact that he no longer has a full blown head of hair. More than the condition, they see the act of wearing the hair pieces and wigs in itself as a bad thing, as it they really have no choice but to display their condition.

Of course, some of these perspectives have improved, while some already have been remedied. For instance, many people—at least the informed ones—no longer consider hair loss as some sort of stigma. Science has already shed so much light on the topic of hair loss. Making it better for everyone, research has proved that hair loss (or reasons for it, such as male pattern baldness) is common. And people are not keen to make fun of people with conditions they might have in the future.

As for people seeing the use of hair wigs as a sign of immaturity, certain reasons for hair loss make this moot. Cancer patients wear hair wigs for more reasons than one. And for those who do not really understand, there are human hair wigs or natural hair wigs. With human hair wigs, it will be difficult for anyone to know that someone is wearing artificial hair pieces, thanks to natural hair wigs made from actual human hair.

Obviously, people shouldn’t be afraid to wear hair wigs. Consequently, others should understand that the use of hair wigs today is very common.

Synthetic Hair Wigs versus Human Hair Wigs

When choosing a wig hair, two options come into mind: synthetic hair wigs and human hair wigs. These two are the two types of hair wigs available in the market today. As with most things, both offer a number of individual benefits and disadvantages—and it is up to the buyer to decide which of these of the following characteristics of these hair wigs will fit his or her needs and preferences.

Human hair wigs, as the name of the product already reveals, are made from human hair. As a result, human hair wigs look natural and feel natural. Also, they are maintained like real hair too, at least in certain aspects. Obviously, those looking for hair pieces that look like the real thing should buy human hair wigs. On the other hand, synthetic hair wigs are made from acrylic. Therefore, they are less authentic looking, although they are lighter than human hair wigs. It is also durable and is very easy to clean.

Point per point, however, human hair wigs will seem like the better choice, at least in terms of quality. For instance, synthetic hair wigs may be more durable, but that doesn’t mean they last longer; human hair wigs last longer, especially when they are properly maintained and taken care of. Human hair wigs are also more flexible, in the sense that they can be styled. In fact, users of human hair wigs can curl their hair pieces using curling irons. They can also blow dry it to achieve certain look and dye their human hair wigs.

This is why people who need hair wigs due to hair loss caused by diseases and other medical roots opt for human hair wigs, since they often want their hair to look authentic in front of other people—even those close to them—so they would not find out about their condition. Needless to say, except for the fact that they are hair pieces, human hair wigs are pretty much like the real thing. When people run their fingers through your hair wigs, they wouldn’t know you’re actually wearing hair pieces and wigs.

Besides assessing the “natural look” of these two hair wigs, there are other factors to assess. For instance, human hair wigs or natural hair wigs allow your scalp to breathe since the material used for synthetic hair wigs are often thicker.

However, human hair wigs are not exactly perfect—they have their faults too, some synthetic hair wigs remedy. For one, they are cheaper. Human hair wigs, after all, are made from human hair. And human hair is expensive. Even if one is bound to change synthetic hair wigs once a year, they are still cheaper than the natural hair wigs. The hair style of synthetic hair wigs is also constant—due to its material, it does not allow people to style it. But this can be seen as an advantage, since it means synthetic hair wigs are more less frills, the equivalent of a wash and wear haircut.

A Remedy to Hair Loss: The Right Wig Hair For You

Choosing the right hair wigs can be tricky, especially if you plan to use your wig to cover up your hair loss. You wouldn’t want the wig hair to look unreal by using poorly-made hair wigs. On the other hand, you wouldn’t want you hair piece to stand out too much, revealing that your hair piece isn’t authentic. It has to be a balance between the two to make it seem authentic, real, as if it is really part of your body. The key is to choose your wig hair carefully. It is not simply a matter of picking between synthetic hair wigs and real human hair wigs, although it would help if you choose the more authentic looking one, of course. To make the wig hair look real when you wear it, you have to consider your facial features, how you wear the human hair wigs, and others.

First off, you must choose human hair wigs or synthetic hair wigs with a color close to your natural hair color. Choose a color that is either one shade darker or one shade lighter, although many suggest that you avoid picking darker shades (even if these human hair wigs are only slightly darker) because the change becomes more noticeable. Of course, needless to say, this only applies when your hair loss in sudden or expected—if you are anticipating hair loss due to chemotherapy, for example. In line with this, you will also want to pick human hair wigs that have the same volume as your hair. Simply put, if your intention is to hide your hair loss, you want to be as discreet as possible.

In this case, it may be wise to buy hair wigs before your hair falls out. This is to allow you to compare your natural hair to the hair piece you are going to buy. Of course, you can also go about it with a different perspective. You can choose synthetic hair wigs or human hair wigs that are entirely different from your natural. See this as an opportunity to sport a hairstyle you couldn’t pull off before. Here, you choices are obviously limitless.

Needless to say, you need to get hair wigs that can adjust according to your liking and your needs. Also, after choosing your wig hair, you can actually style it to your liking. This may seem strange, seem shouldn’t hair wigs have pre-set styles? However, this is a case per case basis—if you think you can make the hair piece look better by styling it, then it’s all up to you. Of course, you’ll need to get a professional stylist to do this. Do not even try and alter the wig hair by yourself.

There is nothing to be ashamed of when buying and wearing hair wigs, especially if you know to choose the right hair wigs that would suit you. Human hair wigs, for instance, allow people to wear hair piece in a manner that doesn’t reveal its true nature.

The Purpose of Hair Wigs

Many people do not understand the purpose of hair wigs. This is why the same people often ridicule people a wig hair, due to the stigma associated with hair loss. The truth is, there is nothing to be ashamed with hair loss since this is a normal occurrence. People loss their hair due to several reasons, some of them common while the others are tragic. But just the same, hair loss has become a common problem among men (and women, too). Hence, the need to wear a hair wig. So why do people wear a hair wigs? What are their purposes? Is it natural to wear a wig at this point in time?

People often wear hair wigs as a part of a costume. Many Hollywood and international stars and celebrities wear hair wigs as part of their dresses for performance. For instance, Cher has often used hair wigs in her performances, revealing her persona as a flamboyant and stylish pop artist. Obviously, hair pieces and wigs are used for performance. For instance, actors and artists wear hair pieces and wigs when they need to have a particular hairstyle for an act but their current hair length wouldn’t allow it (or if the required hairstyle might damage the hair of the person involved). This happens mostly in theater and, occasionally, in movies. Luckily, natural hair wigs allow actors to sport the look authentically despite wearing an artificial hair piece.

Of course, people also wear hair wigs due to hair loss. To be fair, many people have started embracing the “bald” look, especially since many famous and renowned figures have opted to do so themselves. But for many ordinary people, this is simply not a possibility for them. They believe that the only reason these people can go on without any hair (or with little hair) is because of their reputation and fame—which seems ironic, since many might say hair loss will prevent them from achieving varying levels of success in their lives.

There are several reasons for hair loss—from the usual hair pattern baldness to iron deficiency to being a symptom of a disease. For some, detecting the reason for hair loss is easy—for instance, chemotherapy causes hair loss. For others, it’s not—the cause of male pattern baldness has been thoroughly discovered, although a number of underlying roots have been determined.

As it is, hair loss can have a major psychological effect on a person, hence the need for hair wigs. Natural hair wigs allow people suffering from hair loss to live their life as if nothing has changed, at least in public. It also allows people to minimize their suffering, which applies for people who suffered hair loss due to chemotherapy (which cancer patients undergo) or other serious illness and diseases.

With this, it is easy to see why wearing hair wigs should not be difficult at all, in any level. Hair wigs certainly do their part in helping people cope with their hair loss, which can be a terribly difficult thing to deal with.
